Time to Play Catch Up/ Game 19 Review

Sorry for the lack of posting these past few days. I'll highlight what went on:

-Dropped the last 2 against San Fran
-Swept the Marlins thanks to FANTASTIC pitching.

Game 19:
Mets (11-8) 3, Marlins (7-11) 2

The good:
Nieuwenhuis had 3 hits
Niese went 7 innings, allowing 2, striking out 6

The bad:
We had only 6 hits
We left 8 on, compared to the Marlins 2

The ugly:
Bay and Pelfrey are on the DL. Pelfrey likely needs Tommy John.

Overall, a so-so game. But a win is a win.

Game 14 Review

More 9th inning heroics, anyone?

Mets (8-6) 5, Giants (7-7) 4

The good:
Pelfrey actually pitched great.
Stranded only 6 today (still high, but much better)
Tejada hit his seventh double, tied for second place in the league

The bad:
I cannot spell tonight (thank God fore the backspace key)
Fransisco and Rauch blew the lead.
Wright was CS and Davis was picked off.
3-13 with RISP, compared to their 3-7.

The WTH?
I saw that the Mets AAA team had a higher attendance on Friday then the Mets did.

Game 13 Review

We played a great nine innings! Too bad the game went to 10.

Giants (7-6) 4, Mets (7-6) 3

The good:
Bay and Nieuwenhuis homered.
Niese and the first 3 relievers were good.
We had a nice 9th inning comeback.

The bad:
Fransisco blew it.
We only had 8 hits.
We left 9 on.
1-10 with RISP.
We struck out 9 times.
Nieuwenhuis had a 10th inning error.

Game 12 Review

With our pitching lately, 6 runs is usually plenty to win a game. Except when you allow 14 runs.

Braves (7-5) 14, Mets (7-5) 6

The good:
We had 14 hits.
Davis homered.
Dickey struck out 5.
Thole didnt commit an error.
We only struck out 5.

The bad:
They scored 14 on 16 hits (9 extra base).
We stranded 11 on base.

The ugly:
We are the only team in the East with a negative run differential.

As you can see, I tried to find optimism in a game that was not pretty at all.

Today is an off day. Next up is:

Zito (1-0, 1.13 ) @ Niese (2-0, 2.13)

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

Game 11 Review

Johan imploded tonight.

Braves (6-5) 9, Mets (7-4) 3

The good:
Wright, Murphy, and Nieuwenhuis had 2 hits each.

The bad:
We committed two costly errors.
Pitching was terrible.
We left 10 on base.
We struck out 9 times.

The ugly:
It was Santana's shortest start of his career (1 1/3)

Next up:

Dickey (2-0, 2.08) @ Jurrjens (0-1, 7.71)
Hopefully we can keep Jurrjens' ERA high.

Game 10 Review

A good all-around game yesterday.

Mets (7-3) 6, Braves (5-5) 1

The good:
Ike Davis homered for the 2nd straight game
6 starters had a hit
Bay homered and robbed a homer
Gee went 7 IP, struck out 5, and allowed 5 on
Bullpen was A++
Only 3 LOB

The bad:
Thole had more defensive troubles, this time catcher's interference.

I am excited for today's game.

Santana (0-1, 0.90) @ Delgado (1-0, 3.60)

Game 9 Review

My happiness was short lived.

Phillies (4-5) 8, Mets (6-3) 2

The good:
Ike Davis went 2-4 with a HR.
Pelfrey allowed one ER.
Wright remained hot at the plate.

The bad:
Wright was picked off AND caught stealing.
We stranded 7 runners.

The ugly:
Our bullpen gave up 7 runs, 4 of which were UER.
Struck out 10 times.
We were 0-2 with RISP. That's right. Only TWO AB with runners on 2nd or third the entire game. Philly was 4-14.

Not a pretty game to say the least.

Tomorrow: Gee (0-1, 5.06 ) @ Hanson (1-1, 2.70)

Game 8 Review

Another stellar pitching performance!

Mets (6-2) 5, Phillies (3-5) 0

The good:
We won.
Shutout the Phillies
Wright and Duda homered
Ike Davis got a hit!!!!
We were patient at the plate and drew 6 walks
Neise struck out 5 and only allowed 6 in 6 2/3
Bullpen was outstanding

The bad:
We stranded 8 runners
Struck out 9 times

Overall, a fantastic game!

Next game- today at 1:35 PM.

Pelfrey (0-0, 4.76) @ Hamels (0-1, 5.06)

Game 7 Review

We are in another win streak!

Mets (5-2) 5, Phillies (3-4) 2

The Good:
We won
Dickey struck out 7 in 7, and only walked 1
Bay and Hairston homered
Fransisco stuck out 3
Only 3 LOB

The bad:
Dickey allowed 9 hits
We only had 6 hits (granted, it was Cliff Lee)
They had 11 hits
Ike Davis went hitless (assume this from now on unless I mention he gets a hit....)
Thole had ANOTHER passed ball...

So, lots of 'bad's to approve on. But I wont complain with a W.

Game 6 Review

This is the Mets team that everyone expected them to be.

Nationals (4-2) 4, Mets (4-2) 0

A terrible game all around.

The good:
Ike Davis is in the hit column, but has a .050 BA
Santana stuck out 8

The bad:
Thole allowed another passed ball
Santana allowed 8 runners in 5 IP

The ugly:
We had three hits. 3.
Our bullpen walked seven batters. SEVEN.
Our bullpen allowed three runs.
0-6 with RISP.
15 SO on offense. FIFTEEN!!!
Collins was ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
TWICE, thew bullpen walked in a run. TWICE!!!
No longer in first place.

Argh. I'm in a bad mood, so I think it is a good place to stop writing.

Tomorrow:

RA Dickey (1-0, 3.0) @ Cliff Lee (0-0, 1.50)

Game 5 Review

Every good thing comes to an end.

Nationals (3-2) 6, Mets (4-1) 2

Hey, a loss is okay. Might as well get it out of the way. We are still in first place by one game.

The good:
Cedeno went 3-4 in place of Wright

The bad:
We lost.
Gee was less than stellar
Our bullpen lost its untouchableness

The ugly:
We struck out 10 times.
Ike Davis went 0-1 (is now 0-16...)
Only 4 of the 9 starters got a hit.

Today is Strasburg (0-0, 1.29) vs Santana (0-0, 0.00). Lets hope we can rebound.

Game 4 Review

With some late inning heroics, we are 4-0!!!

Mets (4-0) 4, Nationals (2-2) 3

The Mets came back from a 3-0 deficit to stun the Nats in front of 27,000 people (only 57% full).

Highlights:
Kirk Niewwenhuis hit his first home run
Mike Pelfrey struck out 8
Bullpen was once again fantastic

Lowlights:
Ike Davis went 0-4....... again
Bay and Duda also went hitless
Pelfrey allowed 10 hits

Overall, many things to improve on.

Ike Davis will be given today off. Maybe a rest will knock him out of his 0-15 slump.

DIllon Gee will play Ross Detwiler. Game starts at 7:10.

Game 3 Review

I can honestly say I did not expect this. I dont think many people did.

Mets (3-0) 7, Braves (0-3) 5

Jon Niese took a no hitter into the 7th inning en route to a win while striking out seven. Frank Fransisco also pitched the ninth for his third save in a row. Tim Byrdak pitched the 8th for his 2nd hold of the year.

Offensively, we had the best game of the year. They pounded out 11 hits, 5 of which were doubles. After 3 HRs on Saturday, the team hit zero today.

Ruben Tejada went 4-5, Daniel Murphy 2-5, and David Wright 1-1. However, Ike Davis went 0-3, and has yet to record a hit this year (he has two walks). Not good at all.

The Mets head home to play the Nationals in a tough series. Pelfrey pitches tomorrow.

Switching gears.... Boston's bullpen blew the game twice today. Think they miss Bailey yet?

Andrew Bailey Contest/Giveaway

This is the first of many contests/giveaways I hope to hold on this blog! It is a simple contest-- guess when Andrew Bailey will play his first game as a Red Sox. You may also guess that he will be traded/waived before making an appearance.

Post your guesses as a comment below. Use your SCF username as your name. If you are not a member of SCF, you may join by clicking on the banner below!

The person who correctly guesses the date will win a lot of Andrew Bailey cards. In case of a tie, the person to have guessed first will win.

Good luck!

Game 2 Review

Mets 4, Braves 2

Am I seeing this correctly? The Mets are 2-0? I doubt many people expected this, even Mets fans. A win is a win, but if the Mets could find a way to knock in the baserunners, we could be winning games 9-2 instead of 4-2.

It is not every day where you strand 12 runners and still pull out a victory. Yet, the Mets found a way to do so today.

RA Dickey pitched so-so; six innings of five hit two run ball. However, he also walked four batters while striking out three. I hope the walk count will go down, as will his WHIP. Our bullpen once again pitched fantastically well, with Frank Fransisco striking out two for the scoreless save.

Offensively, the power was there today. The fence-move-in played a big role today, as the Mets had three solo homers (Wright, Duda, Duda). Josh Thole knocked in the last run. RA Dickey went 1-2.

Our young guys played pretty well today. Duda went 2-4 with the two solo shots mentioned above, Thole went 2-4, and recently called up Nieuwenhuis went 2-4, replacing Torres.

Tomorrow's game will be Mike Minor vs Jon Niese, as the Mets will be looking to bring out the brooms! Game time is 1:10.

Game 2 Preview and Bailey Update

After a one day hiatus, the Mets are back in action today against Atlanta. As previously mentioned, it will be DIckey and Jurrjens pitching. Accuscore on ESPN is predicting that the Mets are 58% favorites; I'm not sure about that, but I wouldn't mind another win!

This is Dickey's first start after his long mountain hike up to some peak (Kilimanjaro?). I'm hoping he has a fantastic game. He usually has slow starts to the season; I am hoping that does not continue.

Andres Torres was placed on the 15 day DL after only a few innings played. HE strained his calf and was replaced by Scott Hairston, who is coming off an oblique injury. Not a good start to the year for our CF.

Bailey told reporters yesterday that he hopes to be back before the end of the year; hopefully he is right. A clear story also came out on how he injured it. There were originally rumors that he jammed it while squeezing a shampoo bottles, but I guess that was just a rumor. He jammed it covering first against Pittsburgh, but pitched through it as he thought it was nothing. It got worse and worse until he needed surgery.

Game 1 Review

1-0 is not pretty, but a win is a win! Santana had a great game in his return, pitching 5 shutout innings, striking out 5. Despite never hearing of him before today, Ramon Ramirez picked up the win. Frank Fransisco notched the save with a perfect 9th, striking out one.

Ike Davis looked ugly in his return, striking out twice while going 0-4. David Wright went 2-3, as did Thole. I love seeing Thole doing well, as I think he is one of our best young players.

The injury bug struck early this year, knocking out Andres Torres, who was replacing Pagan. Hairston went in in his place.

They play again on Saturday, with Dickey facing off against Jair Jurrjens. I think this will be a great year for Dickey, who is my favorite pitcher on the team.

Preview of 2012 Season

Well, I have a strong feeling that this year will be a tough one. Most experts are predicting that the Mets will finish dead last in the NL East, and I am having the same feelings. Despite today's 1-0 win over Atlanta, I have little confidence. We are rebuilding, and in a few years, I have a feeling we could be playing in October once again.

I would be happy with a 75 win season this year. In order to achieve that, the injury bug needs to stay away from us.

Speaking on injuries.... Bailey is out 3-5 months after having surgery yesterday. According to sources, everything went well. I hope to see him back and better than ever before!
